A Lucky Day at the Thrift Store

There's a thrift store down the street from my work and I go by there a few times every week. They have awesome sales every day and I usually find something I think is cute. Its usually more modern things though.

Today I went there out of boredom and picked out a couple modern shirts. Before getting rung up I looked in the jewelry case and spotted something that you don't ever see at thrift stores: Bakelite!!

There it was, a yellow honeycomb Bakelite bangle, peaking out of a bag of mixed bracelets. I'll take it, please! Oh you'll give it me for half off?? What luck!!

I decided I should have a better look in that jewelry case before leaving the store. There was another bag of jewelry with a red bangle that I needed to see up close.

There was a hole in the bag so I slipped my hand in and felt it. Yup! Thats Bakelite!! I'll take this one as well. Half off? Sure, why not?!

Upon better inspection I was quite happy to discover a third Bakelite bangle in one of the bags, a brown one. All in all I paid $8 dollars for 3 carved Bakelite bangles.

This is by far the luckiest trip to the thrift store I have had since leaving Denver! What's your luckiest thrift store find???

  1. Fantastic finds!!! So far the only Bakelite I have come across was one red spacer I paid $0.50 a while back at a UCP trift store. I can still dream to be as lucky as you to find something similar to these three in one shopping trip someday. :)

    1. This is the first time I have found a Bakelite bangle at a thrift store and I go pretty often. It keeps me hopeful that the scores are still out there!

    1. I collect it so I can spot it by eye for the most part. Once I feel it I know for sure if it is bakelite or not.

  3. I'm glad I'm not the only one who visits the thrift store a couple times a week!

What snazzy, lucky finds! I'm not a bakelite collector, but I love your three bangles, especially put together. They make a really interesting contrast.

Today I found a snazzy vintage rhinestone necklace and a beautiful vintage stole which pretty much made my day. I've been having the best summer-fall thrifting of my life!

    1. I've had other lucky finds-a 30s mens Hollywood jacket, a deadstock Dali tie. Obviously those are mens so even though they were cool it wasn't something for me. I did find 3 or 4 pairs of spring-o-lators in my size once at a Goodwill. That was fun!

  5. I am so envious - I am praying something like that happens to me in ICT, but I doubt it - there are some antique booth HOUNDS in my town.

My best find, unquestionably was a Heywood Wakefield step endtable. Not in pristine condition, but not beyond help either: http://veravonvixen.blogspot.com/2012/08/admitting-you-have-problem-mid-century_16.html

    I am a proud furniture hoarder. :)

  6. All the bracelets are gorgeous!
My best thrift score for bakelite was a thick black carved one for $6, and a thin carved one for $3. I always wear black, so it was fate!

  7. So jealous, but so stoked for you! The thrill of the find, that is part of the reason we love vintage shopping!

  8. Holly, there is this new Goodwill off of Paseo Del Norte & Louisiana, I go there about once a week. Last week I found this camel colored leather jacket that was marked for $9.99, I walked around with it, tried it on. I then found a tiny ink mark on the left shoulder, my hair covered it, but I decided not to get it. When I was at the cashier getting my other items, he asked why I didn't get the jacket. When I told him about the ink he said he would give it to me for half off. OK. He ended up ringing it up for $2.99!

    1. The ones near my work have a lot of cute modern clothes too. I haven't bought new clothes in ages because I get them all at thrift stores. I also got this white cabinet for my bathroom for $14. It was scratched up so I painted it and fogged the glass and it looks brand new. I think I'm gonna do something like that for Scarlett's room.

  9. What a fabulous find!!! So gorgeous, and so cheap!! I've only found bakelite at a thrift one time, and it was a couple of very cute thinner, rounded bangles in nice marbled colors for I think about $2. I restrained myself from doing my happy dance 'til I was safely in the car :-)
I'm so envious of your finding multiple pairs of springolators in your size...I think if that happened to me I might faint!

    1. I had to restrain myself too, especially when she said half off. The springolators I found in Denver. There was a brown pair, a red pair and a leopard pair, all in my size. I was pretty excited.

  14. WOW WOW WOW! What a huge, cheap find and they are so beautiful! I am shocked, a little jealous, and super happy that found them.

  15. Sorry to make everyone jealous! It was definitely a lucky find for me. I have been going to thrift stores for many, many years and this is by far my best score. I used to find tons of stuff in Denver and the outlying areas (Brighton, Ft Collins, Aurora) but those were usually things to sell. This was great because it is something I personally collect.

  17. Im weeping!!!! Wow what an amazing find! My best find was a 1960's lamp by famous UK designer Jasper Conran - it was just £1 ($1.50)on a flea market, they retail for around £200 ($300) at antiques fairs!!
