300

Wow! I'm at 300 followers! Thank you everyone for following my little blog :-)

Its been about a year since I started this blog. I really didn't know where it was going to go, I just knew that I wanted to present  a Rockabilly option. I'd been following blogs for a while and felt an overwhelming dislike and misunderstanding of what Rockabilly is. There were lots of negative comments and shouts of "I'm not rockabilly!!!" which I always found funny, especially when they were coming from people who were, at one time, into it. I never understood bashing something that you used to be a part of. I can understand if it really is not what you are into, but it just seemed like it was 'cool' to not be rockabilly.

I'm not trying to rant here or call anyone out. My goal was always to present all of this in a positive light. To share the things I love with whoever chooses to follow me. I never want to make anyone feel bad for who they are, how they dress, or what they enjoy. Its not my place to judge. Not that I don't judge, because I think everyone does, but I have no interest in ranting those things on here.

For the most part this has been a really great, positive experience. I have never gotten any hate mail or negative comments. I'm sure there are those out there that don't like me or think I am a vintage snob, as that seems to be what all vintage lovers get called at some point, but I don't really give a rats ass. There is snobbery in every scene, every group, everywhere and you can feed into it, let it bother you, or just ignore it. I just ignore it. And at the end of the day is it really that big a deal? So someone at the bar is judging you for wearing a repro dress, or wearing a vintage dress...do you really care? Does it really bother you? It shouldn't.

Wow, this kinda did turn into a rant. I apologize. I just want everyone to know where I am coming from. I try to talk about lots of different things on my blog because I am interested in all of them. I do associate myself with the Rockabilly crowd (proudly) but thats not all I am. I like modern music and pop culture, history and paranormal. I love and collect vintage but I also have a weakness for Forever 21. And it may shock some of you, but I like repro!! I love Heyday and Trashy Diva and Whirling Turban, just to name a few. I try to share all of that on here and I try to keep it all positive. This started as a happy escape from my crappy job and even though I don't have the crappy job anymore I'd still like to keep this blog upbeat.

Well as a thank you for following me I am planning a giveaway. I am not sure yet what it will be so keep checking back. I have a lot of things going on this month and will be really busy, so I will have to see if I can even do a giveaway in that time. But I just want everyone to know that I appreciate them and their comments.

  2. I have only recently started to follow you, and am sad that I did not discover you sooner. I truly enjoy your style of blogging, and it's nice to see honesty and passion for the things you like and love.

  3. Congrats on 300! I've really enjoyed reading your blog these last few months. I love your attitude and your style. I live somewhere that has kind of a disjointed rockabilly community that's never seemed all that open to people they aren't already close with, so it's refreshing to read your opinions. We just keep doing our own thang and enjoying ourselves in the process, because that's all that matters in the end!

I hope to get to meet you in Vegas! :)

  5. A big congrats on the 300 followers!!!! I love your blog and it's in my bookmarks!

I really like this post! You made some wonderful points and observations regarding the rockabilly culture. Like you said, there are so many diverse aspects that make up rockabilly and there is no "one way" to be. We just need to be ourselves and be positive. I also have repro items that I wear. I adore Whirling Turban dresses and today I am wearing a Stop Staring dress at work. I say wear what makes you happy! There really is no wrong way at the end of the day.

Again, keep up the great work, Holly! Vlv is next week!!!

  7. Congratulations! I just started following your blog, I noticed right off that is was different from the other vintage fashion blogs I read. And that is what I enjoy, that we can all be into such a similar thing, and we all see it different ways. Everyone does vintage a different way, for some this is doing it totally historically accurate. Others it is vintage inspirations turned more modern. Or even mixing vintage pieces with modern clothing all together. Can you tell me which one is "better"? No? Neither can I! I love to see each persons interpretation and celebrate our differences. And so don't worry about being a snob, we all are about something! If it is fashion, or entertainment, or even the bread you like. We all got opinions on something. And you know what they say about opinions! Keep up the good work.

  10. Congrats on your 300! I have always enjoyed reading your blog.

I have always felt you know exactly who you are and what you are and stay true to it...rockabilly girl or not... and not in a vain shallow way but in a passionate one. It's very obvious you have a love for your vintage lifestyle and it's not just a cool trend you try to follow to impress others or to create an image. You are just being yourself and loving what you do. I think this is why you don't get hate mail or negative comments. You are a very genuine person and it comes across by the way you write.

I do get confused about the term "rockabilly" though. Always have. I would love it if you could do a few posts and break it down for some of us....."what makes someone in your eyes rockabilly." Are there different levels of rockabilly? I think people like myself get confused about the term and the term means different things to different people.

I have never considered myself rockabilly but by your definition of rockabilly, you might consider me one? I know I did a post about this a long time ago somewhere on my blog asking just that question. I think I came to the conclusion that I just love mid-century vintage. I think 10-15 years ago when the term rockabilly was used to describe someone, you had an image of a person who listened to rockabilly and lived and collected vintage. I don't think that same image comes to mind now a days when someone calls someone rockabilly. Perhaps this is why so many people don't like to be called "rockabilly" now a days. Do you find this to be true? Do you think that there are less and less rockabilly people into the vintage side of the scene? In my mind I really don't associate vintage with rockabilly anymore. Perhaps it is due to the fact that on a rare occasion when I do venture out to see a "rockabilly" show, most people aren't wearing vintage.

I think the topic of the term "rockabilly" is really interesting and would really love to hear what you think about it.

    All the best,
    MaryD

  13. Thanks for all the great comments ladies! I appreciate them so much!

Mary Deluxe-I could do a ton of posts about everything you just asked me!! There are some valid questions that you asked. There are many elements to Rockabilly but at the end of the day it all comes down to music. But even there it can get hazy. I think I will work on a post for you defining it better, at least in the way I see it, as I cant answer all your questions in one comment. For now I will say though that I never considered you Rockabilly because you never associated yourself with it. I know that doesnt answer any of your questions but I promise I will work on a post for you!!!

  18. Great post! Love you and your style. Couldnt care less if you are 'rockabilly', 'vintage' or what have you. I tried to explain the difference a video a long while ago, as it was explained to me via an abormal number of opinions, and was criticized by many for trying to label things incorrectly. Whatever...to heck w/ labels. I am not 'rockabilly'...I am not 'vintage'...I am not an animal! :) What I AM is happy with myself, my style, and my life. I love rockabilly style, which encompasses lots of vintage duds, and I am a vintage enthusiast, which does NOT mean I have to wear actual vintage clothing every time I get dressed. I yam what I yam...as Popeye says. :)
