30s Hair

I am sick of my hair. I feel it is too long and I've become really lazy with it because it is just too much work. I really want something a bit more simple. Something I can set and style fairly easily. Plus, with winter coming up I want to be able to wear more hats.

Right now I am leaning towards a 30s cut. Maybe something like this:

Or this:

I just want something shorter, lighter, and easier. But I need help from you guys! I know nothing about 30s styles. Does anyone have any ideas of what to tell my stylist? Any good links of cuts and styles that you know of? I haven't had short hair in years and I'm a little nervous about it, but if I can get a cute style going I think I'll be ok. So ANY advice from you ladies would be super helpful!!

  1. I set my hair in fingerwaves and curls every night for a 30's style. Short depends on your definition of short. In order to get a finished style like the above picture, my hair needs to be below my shoulders before setting. To me, that isn't short. It's a very basic cut, just long layers with no thinning or razoring. The key is in the set.

  2. Fingerwaves are great like Andrea stated. Also, using metal wave clamps are amazing. When I did a vintage hair and fashion show a year ago, my stylist used the clamps to create a late 20s/early 30s bob. The result was awesome! Sally's has these on their website and in their stores:

As for the length, I like the second picture the best! I am trying to grow my hair out right now so I am biased towards longer hair. I had to keep mine so short for a long time because I had major thinning after going off the pill (I am also in the early stages of heredity hair loss). I am on rogaine now and my hair is finally back to normal! My hair grows super slow too!

Overall, I think your 30s cut will look amazing! Just always give yourself enough length to do a ponytail on days you are running late or feeling lazy!

I think Andrea is also correct that the length needs to be a bit longer (ie just at or below the shoulders) so the curled set will have the result/look like the second 30s photo.

  3. Yeah I guess I don't want it too short, just short for me. I want to have the curls rest either right at or above my shoulders. And I'll definately need layers because I have really thick hair so it needs to be thinned out. I was also debating dying my hair red, but I will have to talk that over with my stylist. I dye it black right now and its really hard to get that out. Maybe she can strip it or something. Thanks for the advice ladies!! I'm really excited for this! If I wasn't getting ready for the Rhythm Rocker I'd cut it tomorrow!!

  4. I'd think twice about the red...you look great as a brunette! I dyed my naturally light brown hair red for many years, and it takes soo much upkeep, because red fades after just a few shampoos. You have to dye it really often to keep the shade vibrant, and use color-depositing conditioner in between dying. It's a big commitment! Also, stripping your hair to get color out is really, really damaging. Just a word to the wise :)

  5. Yeah I had red hair for a long time and it was such a pain!! I love it though. I was thinking I could do a more natural red. Last time I did blood red and it was really hard to maintain. But we'll see. I like the black and I dont want to ruin my hair trying to get it out.
